Still in his twenties when he wrote this only slightly better than routine short adventure novel, Brunner tries for something involving and thoughtful but fails to reach anything much beyond the kind of fake transcendence that would mark many early Gene Roddenberry Star Trek episodes half a decade later. The Old Race lured by the call of their dying companion look like “veils, filmy, indistinct, of multiple soft colors, drifting in from the distant stars towards this planet of all planets, patterns of organized non-physical energy awareness beings” (Part 2, p. 117). Still, his treatment of the psi-gifted as a new persecuted minority, whose superior abilities actually reflect the better angels of our nature, is intriguing, an advance over that of van Vogt slans and even Wyndham’s chrysalids. A more nuanced portrait of a wounded psychic was provided by Brunner two years later, and under his own name; we turn to that novel next.
